One thing that continues to baffle me about gold star hate in the lesbian community is the idea that being a gold star is a privilege, as opposed to a conscious choice made in the face of varying levels of hostility from society.īut if one asks a non-gold star why she decided to be with a man, the answers are often something like: It's kind of cute and aesthetic, and most people here seem to know what it means. I would be interested in knowing where it comes from, with good sources, as I've heard both versions. It is unknown whether it was a self-ascribed moniker, a term of endearment, or a mockery/insult. Our sexual orientation is the same, we just have different experiences and that's fine. While I don't agree with the Tumblr radical feminist/political lesbian concept of compulsory heterosexuality (AKA comphet), and therefore do not believe that every single woman who claims to be a lesbian on this platform necessarily is one, I acknowledge that there are lesbians out there who have had sex with men in the past. Lesbians who have had sex with men exist, and I am not trying to argue here that they are necessarily bisexual or that they are a "lesser form" of lesbian. Gold star lesbians aren't "better" than anyone else. On this blog at least, it is a neutral descriptor, not a badge of honour. TLDR: a gold star lesbian is simply a lesbian who has never agreed to have sex with a man. goldstar lesbian gold star lesbian goldstar gold star goldstar discourse gold star discourse lesbian history lesbian community definitions theorizing It’s kind of cute and aesthetic, and most people here seem to know what it means.
